How to Play Squash: A Beginner's Guide

Introduction

Squash is a fast-paced racquet sport that is played by two players on a four-walled court. It's a great way to get fit, improve your reflexes, and have fun. Here's a comprehensive guide to get you started.

Equipment Needed

Racquet:
Lightweight, with a long handle and a small head.

Squash Ball:
Varies in bounce - double yellow dot for advanced players, single yellow dot for beginners.

Protective Eyewear:
Essential to protect your eyes from fast-moving balls.

Proper Attire:
Comfortable sportswear and non-marking shoes.

Basic Rules

Scoring:
Matches are usually best of 5 games. Each game goes up to 11 points. A player must win by 2 points.

Serving:
Server serves from either of the two service boxes.

The ball must hit the front wall above the service line and below the outline before bouncing in the opposite back quarter court.

Rally:
After the serve, players take turns hitting the ball.

The ball must hit the front wall above the tin and below the outline.

The ball can hit the side and back walls in any sequence, but must hit the front wall before it bounces on the floor.

Court Layout

Front Wall:
The main playing wall.

Service Line:
The line on the front wall, above which serves must hit.

Tin:
The bottom section of the front wall, hitting this results in the ball being out.

Outline:
The perimeter on the walls, hitting above this is out.

Service Boxes:
Two small squares at the front where the server stands.

Back Quarter Courts:
Areas where the served ball must land.

Basic Techniques

Grip:
Use a ‘handshake’ grip, ensuring the thumb and fingers wrap comfortably around the handle.

Stance:
Stand sideways to the front wall, knees slightly bent, weight on the balls of your feet.

Swing:

Backswing:
Rotate your body, bringing the racquet back.

Contact:
Hit the ball at waist height, keeping your eye on the ball.

Follow-through:
Extend the racquet forward, maintaining balance.

Strategies

Control the T:
The ‘T’ is the central point where the lines dividing the court intersect. Standing here gives you the best chance to reach all shots.

Vary Your Shots:

Drive:
A powerful shot that travels the length of the court.

Drop:
A delicate shot that barely hits the front wall and lands near the front.

Lob:
A high shot aimed to make the ball land softly in the back corners.

Deceptive Shots:
Use body movements and quick changes in swing direction to confuse your opponent.

Fitness:
Good endurance and agility are crucial. Incorporate cardiovascular and strength training into your routine.

Tips for Beginners

Warm Up:
Always warm up your muscles before playing to prevent injuries.

Watch and Learn:
Observe experienced players or watch professional matches online.

Consistent Practice:
Regular practice improves hand-eye coordination and reaction times.

Coaching:
If possible, get guidance from a coach to refine your technique.

Conclusion:
Squash is an exhilarating and rigorous sport that offers both physical and mental benefits. By following these guidelines and practicing regularly, you’ll improve quickly and find great enjoyment in the game. So grab your racquet, find a court, and start playing!
